Pre-Workout Ingredients Explained
Pre-workout labels can look intimidating. But most of the real work comes down to a handful of well-studied ingredients — and whether they are dosed properly.
Caffeine
The main driver of energy, alertness and reduced perceived effort. Effective doses commonly sit around 150–300 mg — start lower to judge your tolerance and avoid it late in the day.
Citrulline malate
Supports blood flow and the “pump” during training, and may help training output. It is one to check the dose on — underdosed citrulline is common in cheaper formulas.
Beta-alanine
Associated with performance in higher-rep, fatiguing efforts. The harmless tingling sensation (paraesthesia) some people feel comes from here.
Betaine & electrolytes
Betaine is linked with strength and power output, while electrolytes support hydration and performance during hard sessions.
Why the dose matters
An ingredient only works at the right amount. That is why “proprietary blends” — which hide individual doses — are a red flag. Look for a fully-dosed, fully-transparent label.
Both Mr Gains Pre-Workout Extreme Energy and BULK Performance are fully dosed with no proprietary blends. Compare the Mr Gains Pre-Workout range, or read What Is Pre-Workout — and How to Use It.
